Travel Alone and Love It: 25 Tips for Solo Female Travel Travels with Bibi

Traveling is simply a great way to live your life. Why waste your limited lifetime experiencing a single place while you can travel a wonderful planet that can amaze you with every step you make?

Traveling is more than visiting new places. It’s about discovering your true self, about broadening your mind and perception, about world and life, and about expanding your cultural knowledge.

As great as it sounds, it might not be that easy, especially if you travel alone. That’s why, in today’s post, we’re presenting our top 25 tips for successful solo traveling, especially if you’re a female traveling on your own.

1. Save Up

Unfortunately, traveling is neither free nor cheap, so you need to save up month by month in order to have the best time of your life. Make a realistic budget for your traveling expenses to make sure you’ll have enough money to turn back home.

2. Buy Travel Insurance

Better safe than sorry, right? You don’t know what can happen during your trip, but if you end up in a hospital, the last thing you want to worry about is how much debt you’re in.

3. Pack Light

This is a key rule for traveling alone. There’s no need to carry dozens of outfits with you when nobody knows you, especially if you’ll wear swim wear most of your trip

4. Book Only Accommodations with Multiple Positive Reviews

The last thing you want to do when you travel alone is to end up in a creepy place. Ensure that your accommodation is a safe place for you by checking the reviews.

5. Look For Hostels with Common Spaces

Hostels with common space are great when you’re traveling alone. This way you won’t feel so lonely and you could easily engage in conversation with other travelers.

6. Protect Your Identity

Don’t give away your real name so easily to anybody, and don’t mention your hotel’s name and room while you’re chatting with strangers.

7. Stay Low-Key

You don’t want to attract too much attention with expensive jewelry or electronics. If possible leave expensive items at home or store them unseen in your luggage.

8. Learn a Few Phrases in the Local Language

If you make a little effort to learn just a few phrases in the local languages, simple things like “good morning, how are you?”, the locals will appreciate you and it will be easier to make some new friends.

9. Don’t Be Lonely

If you travel alone, it doesn’t mean that you have to be lonely. Just put a smile on your face and just be friendly with anyone you encounter, even if it’s the bartender from the coffee shop.

10. Establish a Routine

If you always drink your coffee from the same place every day during your trip, it will be easier to get to know people who’ll have your back if necessary.

11. Do Something New Each Day

Traveling is all about experiencing new things. Therefore, you should do your research and look for things you can do around, experiences that you’ve never tried before.

12. Meet Other Travelers

These days, there is an app for everything. If you feel lonely, you can leverage more travel apps for meeting other travelers, regardless of your location.

13. Take Day Tours

The best way to get to know a place is to take a day tour to visit and learn about its main attractions.

14. Become a Regular Customer

The staff always remember a regular customer, so you’d better eat at the same restaurant every morning and have a nice conversation too.

15. Be Obvious

You don’t have to hide the fact that you’re a traveler, so put that map on the table because a restaurant is often a safe place for a traveler.

16. Read a Book

Books are a great company on the road, especially when you’re alone. As well, it makes it easier for a stranger to engage in a conversation with you.

17. Start Your Day Early

The last thing you want to do when you’re traveling is waste your time sleeping. You must sleep of course, but not all day long, so you barely get the chance to visit a beautiful place.

18. Walk

Walking is not only good for your health, but it’s also the best way to know and get used to the city you’re in.

19. Do Whatever You Want To

You can be you with no strings attached. No one knows you and might not even speak your language, so there are no strings attached. Actually, you can be whoever you want to be.

20. Have Fun but Stay Safe

You’re on vacation, so you must have some fun. However, as you travel alone, you might want to keep some details for yourself. When you have too much fun, unfortunate things might happen.

21. Make a List of Your Emergency Contact Information

Just in case something happens to you, you must have a backup plan prepared. Therefore, you should have an emergency contact list just in case you run into trouble. You can also leave this list to your hotel staff.

22. Keep Your Valuables Safe

Tourists are the first spotted out by robbers, so keep your valuables close. If you have a backpack, you’d better keep it where you can see it.

23. Keep Family and Friends Updated with Your Travel Plans

Someone should always know what you’re doing or at least what you’re supposed to do. When you travel alone with no one to have your back, your family and close friends should stay updated just in case you go missing.

24. Learn How to Defend Yourself

Safety is your first priority when you travel alone, so self-defense could come in handy for you.

25. Don’t Get Too Drunk

Getting too drunk is not a wise decision when you’re all alone in a place you barely know. A lot of things could go wrong.

Conclusion

Adventuring alone to explore this big world can put you in front of many dangers along the way. That’s why you should take as many safety measures as possible. At the same time, you shouldn’t be scared to experience new things and engage in conversation with strangers.

Just follow these 25 tips and everything should be alright.

  2. Great and very useful tips. I will surely recommend it to my solo travel friends . ‘Staying safe’ should really be a priority for all solo female (even male) travelers!

    1. Thank you so much. Tiffany has provided excellent tips for the solo traveler, no matter if they are male or female. The tips work for both!

  3. Great tips for any traveler! I learned to check reviews prior to booking the hard way, never again will I leave accommodations completely in the hands of someone else.

    1. Oh yes, it’s better to check multiple review sites to make sure everything is on the up and up, and since it really doesn’t take much additional time, I think it’s a must-do before booking.

    1. Thanks John. These safety travel tips are appropriate for both men and women and I’m glad you found them helpful.

  4. Love this! Do what you want to is my mantra (in life and in travel) but I think it’s so easy to get overwhelmed by everyone’s MUST DO OR SEE THIS OR EAT THIS recommendations. I rarely take recommendations because they’re overwhelming. Instead, I trust my gut and go with what I really really want to do. Great post <3

    1. Hello, Chloe, thanks for your opinion! I agree with that!
Sometimes the best thing is just to listen to yourself and it is really hard to keep all the tips in your head. But you need a lot of experience and courage to do that! This is really outstanding and I’d like to be more like that one day!

      Best,
      Tiffany 😉

    2. Thank you and I love your mantra Chloe! I tend to take in all the recommendations and only do ones that suit me best.

  5. I have always loved the idea of traveling alone. I guess I just have to wait til the kids are older. Good read!

  6. Great tips! As a solo traveler myself all of these tips are perfectly relevant, great article! The safety tips are especially pertinent. I make it a point to set pins on the GPS for my hotel in any new city and then wander a bit, getting a bit lost helps to find the hidden gems off the beaten path but always be as careful as possible.
