Hakuba, Japan Music Festival: Snow Machine

Japan is known for its ancient culture, modern metropolises, and, in the snow community, its unrivaled powder snow. The Hakuba Valley rose to fame as host of the 1998 Winter Olympics and has established itself as Asia’s premiere ski destination, combining amazing cultural experiences (hot springs, sushi, castles, and temples) with world class powder snow. This year, however, Hakuba also welcomes a slew of internationally renowned musicians for the inaugural Snow Machine Festival.

The festival will be held in the Hakuba Valley from March 1 to March 4th and will feature world-class electronic artists from Australia, Japan and beyond including Peking Duk, What So Not, Hermitude, and the Jungle Giants.

This heavyweight lineup will perform among some of the most idyllic backdrops throughout the Japanese skifields, from sweeping mountaintop vistas, to cozy après soirees, from outdoor village stages to indoor/outdoor onsens.

Tickets for this event include 4 days of music, 3 days of skiing and 5 nights of accommodation!

While Hakuba has never hosted a festival of this magnitude, last year the Valley did play host to Hayden James, one of Australia’s most popular artist who recently completed a sold out tour of the United States.

Hayden performed a free “pop-up” show on the Corona Bar on the Happo One Resort in front of hundreds of excited fans dancing in their ski boots. After two hours of dancing and revelry, everyone rode down the mountain to the ski-in-ski-out Marillen Hotel for more music and dancing.

The next day 400 people gathered for an outdoor evening performance in the village that featured Hayden and several guest performances.

The Music Festival

Snow Machine will follow a similar format with afternoon après performances on the resorts so festival goers can enjoy music while exploring the different terrain on offer in Hakuba. There will be a main stage in the village with evening performances and after parties and smaller stage performances throughout the Valley.

Tickets include 4 days of music, three days of skiing, and accommodation and are currently on sale at snow-machine.com. For more information about Hakuba, visit Hakuba.com.
