Six Best Nature and Wildlife Experiences Across Africa
Six Best Nature and Wildlife Experiences Across Africa
Seeing animals in their natural habitat is something that should be on everyone’s bucket list. There is something so magical about seeing a lion running in the distance or a giraffe grazing on some leaves in the wild, that has to be really experienced to be appreciated. Africa is home to some of the most incredible nature and wildlife experiences – and here are six of the best.
See the Great Migration in Tanzania
Some of the largest game reserves and parks in Africa are in Tanzania and so this is a great place to head if you want to see giraffe and lions. However, if you are heading to Tanzania, one thing you won’t want to miss is the Great Migration. This is where over a million wildebeest, zebra, and gazelle make a year-long round-trip from the Serengeti to Kenya’s Masai Mara. If you time your trip right you will be able to see this amazing natural phenomenon.
Go whale watching, South Africa
If you head to South Africa’s coast between June-November, you might be lucky enough to spot a Southern right whale, a type of baleen whale, and their young! This is their favorite area for child rearing and there are plenty of boat tours to help you spot them. Keep your eyes peeled and you’ll be able to see some stunning whales up close.
Visit animals in an orphanage in Kenya
Conservation is really important when it comes to wild animals in Africa, but for some of them, the only option is care and rehabilitation somewhere like the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust. You can watch the animals in their care be looked after, fed and played with, and even help the efforts by sponsoring one of them for just $50 a year.
Dance with a lemur in Madagascar
Sifaka, or dancing lemurs, are just one type of animal that you might see while visiting Madagascar – so called because of the way they move across the floor, propelling themselves with their arms. Yep, just like in the animated movie! Some of the other creatures you spot might be species you’ve never even heard of before, like fossas, aye-ayes and the giraffe-necked weevil.
Spot the Ethiopian wolf, Ethiopia
If you head to Bale Mountains National Park, not only will you be greeted with some of the most beautiful views, but you also might be lucky enough to spot an Ethiopian wolf. These creatures are endangered, and over half of them live in this park, so to see one is a real experience.
Take a boat safari in Botswana
Not quite a ship, the boat you will most likely be gliding around in on Botswana’s Okavango Delta is called a Makoro and is a made from a hollowed-out tree trunk. Luckily you won’t be expected to do the steering yourself as you will be accompanied by a guide who will also point out the incredible wildlife such as reed frogs, antelope lechwe, hippos, and crocodiles!
