Best Places for Stargazing and Meteor Showers in India

Twinkle, twinkle, little star. The rhyme we have all grown up with. That was a time when we could lift our heads to the heavens and gaze at the stars from wherever we were. Nowadays, under the city lights, smog, pollution that engulfs us all the time, stargazing is a far-fetched thought.

Sometimes you want to be whisked to a different place of peace, where you can lie under the skyline and gaze endlessly at the stars and feel beautifully insignificant. The delight of watching the shimmering sky dotted with stars and spotting of shooting stars or meteor showers is something that wordy descriptions do not do justice to. Someone who hasn’t experienced staring in awe at the Milky way and gone off-grid, away from material gains and hassled life, has missed something they must make up for.

In India, many places are specific to capturing the starry skylines and meteor showers and are in almost every region of India. You just have to go to the right place. We will take you through the different best places for stargazing and spotting meteor showers in India.

The Lonar Crater

The Lonar Crater or commonly called the Lonar Lake, falls in the Buldhana district of Maharashtra. It is not just a lake like others. This location is a certified geo heritage site created by a geological impact many years ago. It is an impact crater formed by a meteor impact that fell on our planet thousands of years ago. It is not only a national but is a globally renowned tourist attraction. Aside from its already famous history, lesser-known it is for its stargazing and shooting stars dimension. It is one of the best places to go stargazing, and the night sky is always brightly lit up and bombarded with beautiful specs of light. Trekkers, hikers, campers, and tourists flock this site usually. Don’t waste your time taking pictures, as they don’t do justice to what the bare eyes experience.

Neil Island

Neil Island is a quaint island that is roughly about 3km to 4km in length and a two-hour ferry ride from the main town of Port Blair. Not many tourists have this island on their travel itinerary since it isn’t very popular. Surrounded by beautiful blue water on one side, it boasts of white and black sand beaches, which is rare considering its size. Not many travelers know that it is also one of the best places to experience the Milky way which lines up its skies every night. Neil island gives a great show of a picturesque canvas above your head and lining up with the horizon if you are star gazing from the beach.

Katao

Roughly about 15000ft is the small little town of Katao in Sikkim. Its gloriously elevated location is a site for travelers to experience. Many travelers come to Katao for camping, hiking, and trekking purposes. Their main attraction is the skies at night when they set up camp. During the day, it is spectacular considering the peaks are clothed with snow all year round, but at sundown, the sky turns amber, showing off its starry sky motif, which is a sight to sore eyes. Away from the artificial lights and city, this site has a way of making you believe you can touch and feel the astral lights with your hands. The starry nights in Katao will be a long-distance away from the main city of Sikkim, but if you seek peace in your heart and awe on your face, there is no place like this
