Have you ever wanted to stand on a corner in Winslow, Arizona? I know I have!

“Take It Easy,” the classic 1970s rock song written by Jackson Browne and his friend Glenn Frey, lead singer of then new band called the Eagles, literally put Winslow, AZ on the map.

The historic downtown area has rekindled the spirit of the old Route 66 and the most popular attraction is Standin’ on the Corner Park, at Second Street and Kinsley Avenue, an homage to a snippet of lyrics from the Eagles song “Take It Easy.”

The park features a bronze statue of a long-haired dude with a guitar who is, well, standing on a corner. Behind him, a brick wall features a 2-story painted mural that recreates a row of street-level shop windows that seemingly reflect the image of a girl driving by in – you guessed it – a flatbed Ford.

In 2016, a second statue representing Frey, who passed away that same year, was unveiled at the park. He’s sort of standing off to one side, giving us all a little wave, and the wisp of a smile.

Where To Stay

After posing for pictures on the corner, be sure to book a room at Winslow’s La Posada Hotel, one of the nicest places to spend the night in this part of the state. As a bonus, the hotel is within walking distance from the Standin’ on the Corner Park.

Built in 1929, La Posada was one of the renowned Fred Harvey Railroad Hotels. Fred Harvey, who “civilized the west,” introduced linen, silverware, china, crystal, and impeccable service to railroad travel. Famous former guests at La Posada include the likes of Albert Einstein, Amelia Earhart, Franklin D. Roosevelt, Betty Grable, and John Wayne.

The hotel was restored in 1997 and is a destination in itself. The Turquoise Room restaurant serves regional contemporary Southwestern cuisine, and the menu selections are excellent! The Turquoise Room is open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner so stop by and grab a delicious bite to eat.
